San Antonio International Piano Competition Announces Winner

he Sixth San Antonio International Piano Competition took place last fall in San Antonio, TX. Mi-Jung Im of Korea captured top prize with a powerful performance on the Yamaha CFIIIS concert grand piano. Judges made the announcement following the final rounds at the Ruth Taylor Recital Hall at Trinity University. A winners recital featured all three medalists followed by a formal awards ceremony. The San Antonio Express-News described Im's performance of Rachmaninoff as "poised, technically clean" with "many beautifully crafted moments."

Im holds a doctorate from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, masters degree from Juilliard and is currently on the faculty of Jersey City State College. Since the Competition, she has quickly drawn the attention of concertgoers with a New York City recital last March at Merkin Concert Hall.

The San Antonio International Piano Competition was founded in 1983 by Dr. Richard B. Ferguson and is managed by an all-volunteer board of directors. Current Chairman is Ruth Jean Gurwitz. Alamo Music Center has provided Yamaha pianos for the Competition since its inception, and contestants have won the past three years using the CFIIIS. "Each year it has gotten larger, more exciting and, quite frankly, more fascinating. It's been a great experience," commented Alamo Music Vice President Louis Boffa. Their involvement has been described by Gurwitz as "one of our most valuable sources of support over the years."

Alan Menken Awarded Local Honor

omposer Alan Menken, who has won countless Oscars, Golden Globe and GRAMMY® awards for his songs and musical scores, was recognized by his local music community "as perhaps the best songwriter of today." The Westchester Symphony Orchestra honored Menken at a recent dinner and Pops Concert earlier this year at the Performing Arts Center of Purchase College in Purchase, NY.

The North Salem, NY resident is known for his unforgettable musical scores, including Beauty and the Beast, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Disney's most recent animated musical, Hercules.

During the evening's program, guest soloist Debbie Gravitte sang several songs written by Menken from her solo debut recording, The Alan Menken Album.
