Rostropovich Instructs
Yamaha Master Class

stislav Rostropovich, the world's leading cellist and conductor, gave lessons to students of the Yamaha Master Class Course last year in his role as special music advisor to the Yamaha Music Foundation in Japan.

The Master Class Course began in 1988 as advocated by Maestro Rostropovich in order to foster promising young talent. Currently there are 15 students in the Master Class Course, including eight in the basic course. Since many Master Class students have left their marks on various international competitions in the past, the Maestro has high hopes for the current crop of students.

Yurie Miura and Tetsumichi Yoshinaga were among five students who participated and received his invaluable advice. The Maestro urged them, "Though you have reached a high standard in technique, you need to liberate your own performing style," and "I want you to be a pianist who can express pppp, the slightest sound one can barely hear." His strict but affectionate guidance was an unforgettable experience for the students.

'Adopt-a-Key' Program Buys
Waldorf School a New Yamaha

very child is a musical instrument" begins a statement by founder of the Waldorf system of education Dr. Rudolph Steiner (1861-1925). The Waldorf School of Orange County in Newport Beach, CA has grown from five kindergarten students nine years ago to more than 200 pre-K through eighth grade students today. Because music is a daily part of its academic curriculum, the school decided to invest in the quality of a Yamaha WX7 professional upright piano.

The Waldorf School raised money for the purchase through an Adopt-A-Key program by which donors "adopt" one or more of the 88 keys. So far, the Waldorf students love playing the piano, commenting that it "has stronger and better quality sound" (Sherwin Kim, 8th grade) and "range in tonality" (Megan Peo, recent graduate).
