DISKLAVIER STARS ON
Considered America's premier 20th century composer, Gershwin wrote
a great deal of music for the player piano. Through the efforts of Gershwin
scholar Artis Wodehouse, the piano rolls that he created were
digitally transferred to disk, enabling the music to be played by the
Disklavier - the technological 21st century connection to the player
pianos of Gershwin's day. According to Wodehouse, the Disklavier is
a prime example of today's technology helping to conserve our cultural
past. TRADITION MEETS The instrument is not only used during the regular services and special events, but also for the internationally televised Sunday Mass, La Santa Misa de las Americas. The Very Reverend David Garcia, cathedral rector, recognized the need for the traditional church to become more current in its music ministry. He felt the pipe organ, while beautiful in sound, couldn't effectively be controlled by the sound engineer during televised broadcasts. Fr. Garcia made arrangements with Alfredo Flores, Jr., president of Alamo Music in San Antonio, for the purchase of the piano. Robert Bernal, the cathedral's sound engineer, describes the
new piano as awesome. "The nice round tones of the grand piano brought
a richness like never before to the cathedral music." |
