DISKLAVIER STARS ON
MORNING SHOW

he Disklavier® DGT2 was a star performer and integral part of last September's "CBS Saturday Morning" celebration honoring the 100th anniversary of the birth of George Gershwin. The innovative technology of the Disklavier allowed the popular morning show's host Russ Mitchell to sit at the keyboard and marvel as the instrument performed Gershwin - as if his ghost was present in the studio. While the keys were visibly moving, Mitchell informed the national television audience about Gershwin's legacy, documenting the Disklavier's pioneering role in preserving that heritage.

Considered America's premier 20th century composer, Gershwin wrote a great deal of music for the player piano. Through the efforts of Gershwin scholar Artis Wodehouse, the piano rolls that he created were digitally transferred to disk, enabling the music to be played by the Disklavier - the technological 21st century connection to the player pianos of Gershwin's day. According to Wodehouse, the Disklavier is a prime example of today's technology helping to conserve our cultural past.

TRADITION MEETS
TECHNOLOGY IN TEXAS CATHEDRAL

an Fernando Cathedral, the oldest sanctuary in the U.S. (established in 1731) took its music into the 20th century when it purchased a Yamaha C2 grand piano.

The instrument is not only used during the regular services and special events, but also for the internationally televised Sunday Mass, La Santa Misa de las Americas. The Very Reverend David Garcia, cathedral rector, recognized the need for the traditional church to become more current in its music ministry. He felt the pipe organ, while beautiful in sound, couldn't effectively be controlled by the sound engineer during televised broadcasts. Fr. Garcia made arrangements with Alfredo Flores, Jr., president of Alamo Music in San Antonio, for the purchase of the piano.

Robert Bernal, the cathedral's sound engineer, describes the new piano as awesome. "The nice round tones of the grand piano brought a richness like never before to the cathedral music."
