ELVIS AND BURT
A
highlight of the tour was the duo's October performance at New York's
Radio City Music Hall. Accompanied by a Yamaha CFIIIS,
Bacharach and Costello performed new songs from Painted From Memory
along with medleys of Bacharach's hits and new arrangements of Costello
tunes like Accidents Will Happen and Alison.
Twenty years ago the idea of Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello writing
and performing together would have been difficult to imagine. Bacharach
was the consummate Hollywood hit maker, while Costello symbolized the
angry English youth. However, Costello quickly became rock's renaissance
man and has delved into such diverse genres as country, soul, and classical,
as well as his unique style of rock.
GREAT JAZZ MUSIC
ON THE HUDSON
DURING SUNNYSIDE
JAZZ FESTIVAL
Yamaha
CFIIIS
concert grand piano took center stage last August at the third annual
Sunnyside Jazz Festival at Sunnyside, the historic home of Washington
Irving, in Tarrytown, NY. The Festival is a popular summer event with
its mix of great music including swing, bebop, Brazilian, and modern
jazz, and a picturesque outdoor setting overlooking the Hudson River.
This year's Festival featured a world class range of new and returning
performers including the David "Fathead" Newman Quintet, the Bob Mintzer
NY Big Band, the Houston Person Quartet featuring Norman Simmons,
the Lou Donaldson Quartet, among many others. New to the Festival this
year were jazz history workshops which trace the evolution of the art
form for children and those attendees new to jazz. Each evening concluded
with Festival jam sessions led by trumpeter and Festival founder and
producer Mark Morganelli & The Jazz Forum All-Stars plus special
guests.
Looking forward, the next Sunnyside Jazz Festival will be held August
28-29, 1999.
