Throughout the weekend, simulcasts of Jimmy Lyons Stage concerts were presented on a full size theater screen in the Festival's Jazz Theater, interspersed with special screenings of select jazz

videos featuring Duke Ellington. Historic Ellington photos by Leigh Wiener were also exhibited. Festival General Manager Tim Jackson has been recognized by many for bringing new talent to the stages of the Festival, while maintaining the tradition. Other highlights of the Festival included jazz conversations, panel discussions, workshops, exhibitions, clinics, and an international array of food and festivities. The Festival closed with performances from the Monterey Jazz Festival Chamber Orchestra, the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra, and Joshua Redman.

Cape May Swings with Yamaha Pianos

ore than 5,000 jazz lovers flocked to Beach Drive at the southern tip of New Jersey November 12-14 for the Cape May Jazz Festival. Three Yamaha CFIIIS concert grand pianos, an S4 grand piano, a C3 and a C7 conservatory grand piano fulfilled the festival's needs, according to organizer Carol Stone.

This fall's festival was dedicated to Duke Ellington, and the great man's own Duke Ellington Orchestra served up the high note.

The 16 piece big band, directed by Paul Mercer Ellington, put on two shows at Convention Hall. In addition, artists throughout the festival showcased Ellington's signature tunes such as "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" and "In a Sentimental Mood."

The festival opened with GRAMMY® Award winner Chuck Mangione and his quartet. The George Mesterhazy Trio, featuring Mesterhazy on piano and vocalist Mark Murphy, held court at the Hotel Alcott, while the Orrin Evans Quartet featuring Duane Eubanks, fresh from Evans' second place finish in the prestigious International Thelonious Monk Competition, lit up Carney's Main Room.
