Yamaha Earns PRIDE Index Gold Rating for Fifth Consecutive Year

Recognized for Efforts to Support Sexual and Gender Minorities

Yamaha Corporation announces that it has been awarded a Gold rating by the PRIDE Index*1 2023, making this the fifth consecutive year it has received the highest-possible rating. Established by Japanese nonprofit group "work with Pride", the PRIDE Index evaluates efforts by companies and other organizations to support sexual and gender minorities, such as members of the LGBTQ+*2 community.

The Yamaha Group believes that the diversity of people is the source of new value creation. It also seeks to further strengthen, grow, and develop its corporate competitiveness by respecting and using each individuality. Accordingly, the Yamaha Group is promoting understanding of and offering support for members of the LGBTQ+ community as an ally in Japan in order to build a better place to work for LGBTQ+ individuals and ensure that our business activities respect diversity. Efforts thus far include the design of a logo and distribution of stickers to display that the Group is an ally of the LGBTQ+ community, along with the production of tools for promoting understanding regarding the LGBTQ+ community in the workplace. Other initiatives include the establishment of a consultation service for LGBTQ+ issues and revision of work and other regulations to include same-sex partners and their children in the definition of family members used for Company systems.

This year, Yamaha set up a booth and joined the parade at Tokyo Rainbow Pride 2023, which was held in Yoyogi Park in April and is one of the largest LGBTQ+ events in Asia. Yamaha also held Pride Month 2023 in June, which has been designated as Pride Month around the world and is seen as a time for activities and events that raise awareness of the rights of members of the LGBTQ+ community. As part of this initiative, Yamaha interviewed LGBTQ+ artists and introduced the Yamaha Group's approach to LGBTQ+ inclusion.

Moving forward, Yamaha will continue to work toward greater understanding of LGBTQ+ issues and the promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), while striving to cultivate a corporate culture that honors and utilizes the individuality of each member of its diverse pool of talent.

Organizations are awarded one of three ratings—Gold, Silver, or Bronze—based on evaluation in five different areas: Policy (action declaration), Representation (network of LGBTQ+ community and allies), Inspiration (raising awareness), Development (human resources management policy and programs), and Engagement/Empowerment (social responsibility and external activities).
  • *2 LGBTQ+ functions as an umbrella term for sexual and gender minorities. The initials stand for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning or queer, and the "plus" represents other sexual and gender identities.
