Dear Backstage Pass Reader,

Welcome once again to Backstage Pass. Our Fall 2001 issue focuses on woodwinds: on the cover is Mary Karen Clardy, a flutist who combines her phenomenal energy with the enviable gift of organizational ability. She shares invaluable strategies on how she does it. At the other end of the spectrum, Mimi Stillman, at 19, has already accomplished more in her brief career than many of us do in a lifetime. Stillman and the other emerging young performers highlighted in this issue prove that age is no barrier to achievement. They provide great inspiration to aspiring musicians of any age.

It's been an exciting summer leading up to this edition of Backstage Pass, and inside you'll also find coverage of the 2001 Drum Corps International final night in Buffalo, New York. A terrific season of competition culminated in a few surprises--on all-Yamaha equipment. In addition you can read about Keiko Abe, sensational Japanese marimba player and teacher, who can be heard in a rare US performance for the PASIC convention in Nashville, this coming November.

Yamaha is a strong supporter of music in our nation's schools, and in this issue you'll find out more about some of Yamaha's prominent educational programs. Check out the list below to see where we will be exhibiting in coming months. And as usual, you'll also find news and information on Yamaha's latest products.
