Bruce Gates's Biography

Born in Geneva, IL, Bruce Gates now resides in the Phoenix, AZ area, where is the adjunct trumpet instructor at Scottsdale Community College. His musical career spans more than 3 decades. Upon graduation from Western Illinois University, Bruce enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. After five years as lead and jazz trumpet with an Air Force regional band, he auditioned for and won one of the most coveted positions in big band jazz - lead trumpet with the world-renowned Airmen of Note in Washington, D.C. Over the next 15 years, he acquired a distinguished reputation for his powerful, driving sound, masterful command of the upper register, and sterling musicianship. During this period, he also released two critically acclaimed CDs on the Sea Breeze label with his own Jazz Consortium Big Band, Forced Air Heat and Joyous Reunion.

Bruce is extremely dedicated to music education and is in demand as a clinician, guest soloist, and adjudicator. Clinic and workshop topics cover such subjects as "The Difference Between Lead Trumpet and First Trumpet," "Developing and Maintaining Embouchure Strength and Breath Control," "Musical Phrasing for the Entire Trumpet Section," and "Developing a Mature Concept for the Big Band."
