Terry Winter Owens is an internationally published composer and pianist based in New York City. Her highly acclaimed piano music has earned her a nomination for the Van Cliburn Commission 2005.
Her music has been widely performed in Europe, the Far East, the U.S and Canada; most recently in England, Spain, Turkey, Dubai and New York City. "Ancient Fire," a new work for two pianos and narrator will be premiered at the Klangfruehling Festival in Austria in the spring of 2005.
Many of her works include narration inspired by her long time interest in astrophysics. Others include her English translations of the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke as well as her own poetry. She is currently composing music for Disklavier and live pianist.
"Exposed on the Cliffs of the Heart," a CD of her piano music performed by virtuoso Francisco Monteiro for AM&M Records, Portugal was released in 2000 and is available from Amazon.com. Her two piano work, "Pianophoria #3," a finalist in the Whitney Museum Two Piano Festival, is heard on the CD "Fantasy" (Apollo Records, England) performed by Claire and Antoinette Cann. The Cann Duo has premiered several of Owens' two piano and piano-four hand music and these pieces are now included in their standard repertoire.
Owens' chamber work "Messages for Raoul Wallenberg," was awarded First Prize in the Miriam Gideon Competition 2000. Other award winning compositions include her "Toccata" for solo piano and "Peace Anthem" for chorus, piano and percussion. She has received grants from Meet the Composer, The Greenwall Foundation, the American Composers Forum and the New York State Council on the Arts.
In addition to music for piano and two pianos, her catalog includes music for chamber and vocal ensembles, symphony orchestra and a large collection of music for children. Her publishers include Universal and Doblinger in Vienna and, in the US, Carl Fischer, Neil Kjos, C. Alan Publications, E. C Schirmer and others.
She has scored music for four films by filmmaker Douglas Morse, some of which have been screened at international film Festivals.
Owens studied composition with Ralph Shapey and received a BA in Music from City University, New York. She did graduate work in musicology at New York University.
